What are typical vehicle barrier maintenance requirements?

This is an important and often overlooked question. For a quality, well-designed barrier maintenance basically consists of:

  • Routine inspection to remove wind-blow debris
  • Monthly inspection to verify the barrier is operating smoothly and the time to open and the time to close are as designed, to remove any debris from storm water drains (if present), to remove any dirt accumulations from the barrier mechanisms, and to inspect the paint for chips and the onset of rust
  • Quarterly lubrication of selected components and (for hydraulically operated barriers) fluid level inspection

That's really about all that is required.  However, be aware that some manufacturer's barriers are notorious for maintenance issues.  Ask a lot of questions about warranty, past maintenance experience, and vehicle barrier downtime, lest you become a member of the $1,000,000 maintenance club!
